How Emprise Mobility OTs Deliver Better Solutions Through Expert Collaboration
An Interview with Verity, Occupational Therapist (OT) at Emprise Mobility
Emprise Mobility’s team of experienced Occupational Therapists brings specialised knowledge and a collaborative approach that saves valuable time for both therapists and clients. By partnering with health professionals and working directly with clients, Emprise OTs ensure the right equipment solutions are found quickly, effectively, and with long-term needs in mind.
In this conversation, we speak with Verity, an experienced Occupational Therapist (OT) at Emprise Mobility. She shares valuable insights about supporting therapists in navigating complex equipment decisions and highlights Emprise’s partnership approach to finding the right solutions for clients with diverse needs.
“We take the time to support therapists to be as comprehensive as possible. Sometimes it’s an easy fix with a small change in equipment, but sometimes it takes more time and multiple trials. We are there with the therapists throughout the process to help guide them to solutions that work for everyone.”
Keeping Up With Innovative Products
It can be overwhelming for therapists to keep up with all the equipment options available today. How do you support them in navigating this challenge?
It can be so hard for people to keep up with the huge range of equipment out there. We know from our own experience, and I know from my experience working as an OT previously in other organisations, you just can’t keep up. There are new things being released and developed all the time, and you can’t stay on top of it all.
We’re really happy to be able to focus on the products and have that in-depth knowledge that OTs and therapists can access. They can tap into our knowledge, and that helps to make sure that people get what they need.
Collaborative Problem-Solving for Complex Needs
When do you find your expertise is most valuable to therapists?
We can help people across our full range of equipment, obviously, but where we come into play might be where things become a bit more complex for clients. So they might need multiple pieces of equipment to work all together with each other, or the person might have a health condition or a disability that could change over time.
That needs to be taken into account with whatever equipment they’re going to be looking to use. The therapist might have already tried all these options, and they’re still not finding the right thing. They might need some extra guidance about what their options are.
- Our partnership with therapists means we can:
- Provide an additional clinical perspective on complex cases
- Share up-to-date knowledge on new equipment options
- Offer practical solutions based on real-world experience
- Support therapists who may be working in isolation
Case Study: Problem Solving For A Wheelchair Issue in Aged Care
Could you share a specific example of how you’ve supported a therapist with a complex case?
I was contacted by an occupational therapist from an aged care facility about a resident who needed a new wheelchair. The resident was using a complex facility-owned wheelchair that could tilt back and recline, but she was leaning to one side during the day, and the staff had concerns about pressure injuries. Working closely with the OT, I gathered information, including photos of the current setup. I brought several wheelchairs and cushions to try.
Initially, we thought we could solve the problem with just a new cushion rather than replacing the entire wheelchair. We chose a cushion that would keep her bottom further back in the seat to prevent sliding forward. We also raised the armrests so she could rest her arms comfortably without leaning to the side, and we adjusted her footplates to better support her feet. This approach helped, but didn’t completely solve the problem.
On our second visit, we discovered that the staff used the recline function on the chair instead of the tilt function. The OT provided education about when to use different controls, but with many caregivers rotating through, the settings were being changed and not reset properly.
The final solution was a new wheelchair without the recline function. We got a chair where we could fix the recline at a set position while still allowing the tilt function during the day. This prevented her from sliding forward in her seat, which had been causing friction and shearing forces. The new backrest also provided better support along the sides of her body, preventing her from leaning over when fatigued.
The result was excellent – she could sit in her new wheelchair longer, was more comfortable and happier. Her improved posture allowed her to participate in more facility activities, and her pressure concerns were resolved.
If we had just gone with a whole new wheelchair from the get-go, we may have ended up with the same problem. It was through investigation, information gathering and that process of elimination that we were able to resolve the problem completely.
Exploring Solutions To Complex Cases
What specific solutions can you offer in these complex cases?
We can help go through the process of customising some of the equipment through networking with the manufacturers. We can customise things, for example, shower commodes for people, or we can arrange to bring specific equipment in from those manufacturers that we wouldn’t usually have on the showroom floor.
And also, we’re another set of eyes—sometimes having another set of clinical eyes on the picture can help pick up on things that might be missed along the way, in terms of the challenges that might be present in prescribing equipment.
Nowadays, many people are working from home. They might not have that office environment to be able to bounce ideas around with colleagues as easily as it happened previously. We are happy to provide that sounding board and work together towards finding the best solutions.
Working With An OT Delivers Better Outcomes
It might be tempting for families to order equipment online. What are the risks there?
A wheelchair isn’t just a wheelchair. There’s a lot to it, even for a simple wheelchair. We certainly wouldn’t want people to jump in and just order a wheelchair unseen because you could be doing yourself a real disservice financially and from a functional perspective.
Working with an experienced OT brings significant advantages:
- Reduced costs in the long run: Getting the right equipment the first time means you’re not wasting money on unsuitable items
- Comprehensive assessment: Understanding all the factors that influence equipment choice leads to better outcomes
- Future-proofing: Considering how needs might change over time ensures equipment remains suitable longer
- Personalised solutions: Every person’s body, environment and needs are different, requiring individualised approaches
- Training and support: Ensuring everyone knows how to use the equipment correctly for maximum benefit
