Being mobile is a major part of daily life, however challenges to a person’s mobility may impact their independence and confidence across activities of daily living.

Wheelchairs and accessories provide support for an individual who is unable to walk or stand, enabling independence and mobility to access and move around in their home or community. These products can be used on a short-term or occasional basis (e.g. following surgery, community outings, distance mobility) or for long-term use (e.g. permanent medical condition, progressive illness, or disability).

At Emprise Mobility we stock a large variety of wheelchairs to suit the needs of each individual user. Our range of wheelchairs include manual wheelchairs (transit and self propel models), powered wheelchairs, portable electric wheelchairs, specialised wheelchairs (including tilt in space wheelchairs), and customised wheelchairs.

Consideration for Selecting Wheelchairs Products & Accessories

There are a number of considerations that apply:

Safe Working Load

Our range of wheelchairs have different load capacities depending on the model; therefore it is important to always select a product with a safe working load at or above the maximum weight you expect it to carry. It is therefore vital to take into consideration the user’s height and weight.

Sizing

Our range of wheelchairs are available in a range of sizes, including varied seat widths, depths, and heights. Depending on the model of wheelchair, some wheelchairs have fixed dimensions whereby other wheelchairs have a range of adjustable dimensions. It is important that the user’s needs including their body size and positioning needs are considered when selecting a suitable option.

Type

When selecting a wheelchair it is important to firstly consider the individual’s needs and how the wheelchair will be used, to determine the type of wheelchair that is most suitable. Our range of wheelchair types range from transit, self propel, tilt in space, powered, and portable wheelchairs.

Other considerations relate to your specific needs and the environment in which the product will be used:

The user’s needs and goals: Will the individual be pushing themselves or need a carer to assist? How long will the individual be using and sitting in the chair each day? What level of support does the person need? (those requiring occasional or mild levels of support, a manual wheelchair may be sufficient; however, those with significant difficulties may require an electric wheelchair). What features does the individual require?
The environment in which the chair will be used – consider if the wheelchair is to be used indoors or outdoors. Be aware that some larger wheelchairs have an increased overall width which may not fit through some doorways/into some areas. Consider if there is adequate space to turn and manouver the wheelchair.
Is the aid going to be used occasionally/short term (e.g. as part of a rehabilitation program after surgery or for community visits) or will it be on a permanent basis (e.g. daily use within the home and community)?
Transportation: If the individual needs to transport the wheelchair on a regular basis it is important that it can fold up and easily be lifted into the back of a car. Can the user or their companion safely lift the product into the car? Consider the overall weight of the chair.
Does the person require any additional supports/accessories? Some models of wheelchair offer accessories such as oxygen bottle holder, calf support, stump support, elevating leg rests and head supports.
Does the person have any specific seating or positioning requirements such as needing a tilt function or specialised positioning supports?
Consider the users transfers and how this will work with the wheelchair and their other equipment and/or furniture e.g. will the seat height enable safe transfers into the car, bed, comfort chair etc.
How much upper strength does the user have? Some wheelchairs and accessories will require the user to lift them or carry some of their body weight through their arms and shoulders e.g. self-propel manual wheelchairs.
